There are two types of currency currently circulating in Cuba: the Cuban Peso or simply "peso" (CUP) and the Cuban Convertible Peso or "dollar" (CUC). The exchange rate of these two currencies is as follows: 1 CUC = 24 CUP.
On the Island all payments in tourist establishments are made in CUC (Cuban convertible pesos), which can be purchased in airports, hotels, banks and "CADECA" exchange counters.
We recommend visitors to change part of their money in CUC upon arriving in the country and later as needed.
Another way to obtain cash is through ATMs, however, only Visa and MasterCard credit cards are accepted in Cuba to make this type of transaction (American credit cards are not accepted for any type of transaction). At the end of your holiday, you can re-exchange what you have left in CUC's, but remember that there will allways be a bank charge.
Important: Only for the exchange of U.S. dollars converted Cuban pesos (CUC) is there an extra charge of 10%. We recommend that you make the trip to Cuba with a currency other than U.S.
